What I learned from roller derby:
Consistent exercise makes hard things easier to bear and good things better.
Hard work beats talent. If talent wins it's usually paired with hard work. Sometimes talent still wins.
Don't try to be friends with cool kids. Be friends with people who smile at you and ask you to be their partner in a drill.
Be the person that smiles and asks for partners during drills.
Don't photobomb Pikes Peak, they don't like it.
If you're unhappy with your team wait three months. Invite the team to your house for dinner. If you're still unhappy then wait six months. Invite them again.
If no one else will captain then do it. Leadership is a skill most people can learn with practice. You will be good at it with enough effort and time.
How you handle stress in a game is often indicative of how you handle stress in your life. Do you yell at people and freak out? Or do you handle that shit? Working on handling pressure and stress with grace during a game will help you handle it in real life.
Tell your coach if practice was helpful/fun.
Try out for the all star team.
Always be willing to jam. Even if you never get lead in your life, the willingness to do something hard is a skill that needs practice.
Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think.
